FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT'S DESK

Tuesday, October 9th, the Adair School Board will be presenting the voters of this district the opportunity to vote on a $325,000 bond issue to finance the purchase of 4 buses and improving our student transportation.  We are currently using 4 buses that are in need of replacement, as well as a school van for the smaller groups of students that has high mileage.  Price for a bus has risen to well over $70,000 making it impossible for the district to purchase them out of the regular operating budget.  The buses that will be replaced will be available for your viewing on the weekend of October 6th and 7th

As we approach the end of September, school is going great and student activities are in full swing.  I hope you had the opportunity to attend the Parent Orientation Nights in August.  I would like to remind you of parent teacher conferences scheduled for October 16 and 17.  We have scheduled these for an evening and a morning session to try to accommodate everyone's schedule and to give you the chance to talk with your child's teachers.

Congratulations to the FFA and 4-H students who participated in the Mayes County Fair.  Our students were outstanding and brought home many prizes and an outstanding premium sale amount.  This is the result of many hours of hard work and dedication on the part of the students and their parents.

We are pleased once again to be offering after school tutoring to elementary students who need it.  If your student needs extra help contact Ms. Briggs.  Middle School students who did not score satisfactory in reading or math have after school tutoring available as well.

Adair School is responsible for teaching your child.  But we can't do our job if your child is absent.  Learning builds day by day.  A child who misses a day of school misses a day of learning.  Research shows that attendance is the single most important factor in school success.

Being late for school hurts a child's learning too.  A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss 30 hours of instruction during the year.  Your child's success in school depends on having a solid educational background, one that can only be gained through regular school attendance.

As parents we all try to communicate with our children, although sometime to no avail.  Good communication helps to build family bonds and school success.  Set aside time to talk to your child every day.  Make communication a habit for both of you.  Choose the best time to talk; when everyone is well rested, well fed, and not feeling rushed.  Learn to listen.  Give your complete attention so your child feels valued.  Encourage them to respond, using more than one-word answers such as yes, no, and fine.  Have patience, don't rush them or interrupt.  And last and most important, tell your child you love them often.  A child who feels cherished is more willing to communicate.

Children are our most precious commodities.  No one can put monetary value on a child, but the government recently estimated it costs $160,140 to raise a child from birth to 18 years of age.  That is not counting college if they go.  But when you brake that down it translates to $8,896.66 a year, $741.38 a month, $171.08 a week, and just $24.24 per day.  It only costs a dollar an hour.  What a bargain.

Until next month, enjoy and be thankful for our freedom, and please remember our troops.
